Windermere native vies for top 20 in ‘So You Think You Can Dance?’
By Kathy Aber
To follow his dream of being a professional dancer and making it on Broadway, Jakob Karr, 19, moved to New York City after graduation from The First Academy. While attending Fordham University, where he is currently a sophomore, Karr began the audition process for the sixth season of So You Think You Can Dance?
Approximately 6,000 dancers auditioned in six cities across the United States. Karr, the son of Jim and Tami Karr of Windermere, tried out in New Orleans.
He was one of 151 dancers given a “ticket” to Las Vegas for the second step in the audition schedule.
In Las Vegas, the contestants went through a week of grueling rehearsals with top choreographers. Daily the elimination continued until the top 32 dancers were selected. They went on to Los Angeles, where 12 more dancers will be eliminated and the Top 20 will be announced this week. The announcement of the Top 20 was expected on the show set to air this Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 8 p.m.
If Karr makes the Top 20, there will be a special edition of So You Think You Can Dance on Monday, Oct. 26, to meet the 20 contestants.
On Tuesday, Oct. 27, the final elimination process begins with two shows weekly.
Each week on Tuesday, dancers will perform in various genres chosen and choreographed by talented choreographers. Then, the television audience has a two-hour window to vote for its favorite dancers. Viewers can vote as many times as they want. After each performance, one male and one female dancer will be eliminated. On Wednesday nights, the show will reveal which dancers have been voted off.
The show continues until there is one winner.
Karr has been dancing since the age of 10 when he joined Shooting Stars School of Performing Arts in Clermont owned by Melissa Stokes. He continued dancing with the studio until his high school graduation in 2008. He has won numerous awards and trophies in competitions across the United States. He attended Windermere Elementary School and Foundation Academy in Winter Garden. For more information on his dancing career and photos, do a Google search: Jakob Karr.
